RECOR 25 The card of Selborne, Indir Secretary the Colonies; - 594
A day or two ago I received a letter from my friend, Mr. J. Iyer Ball of Hong Kong, making a request with propriety that if I thought I could do so with propriety, I would second an application which he had recently made to your Lordship, to be appointed Inspector of Education for the Government of the Colony of Hong Kong.
That office has been held satisfactorily for some time and for good pay by the Rev. Dr. Eitel, but Mr. Ball thinks he has good reason to believe that Dr. Eitel means to resign the appointment in April next year, and to proceed with his family to Tasmania, Australia. Should it be so, and the office of Inspector of Education in Hongkong thus become vacant, I shall be glad to know that the Government of the colony will appoint Mr. Ball to the office.
I went to Hong Kong in the spring of 1843.
